OTP & Account Alert WhatsApp Templates

OTP and account alert templates protect customer accounts on WhatsApp. Verification codes use Meta’s fixed Authentication format with a copy-code or one-tap button, while alerts about new sign-ins, usage limits, failed payments and card transactions are Utility templates. Both deliver to US numbers.

OTP & verification codes

OTP & verification codes WhatsApp templates

OTP and verification code templates deliver one-time passcodes for login, sign-up and password reset. They are Authentication templates: Meta fixes the wording (“123456 is your verification code.”), with an optional security disclaimer and expiry note. Authentication templates deliver to US numbers and are priced separately from Marketing.

Authentication templates deliver one-time passcodes with a copy-code or one-tap autofill button. Meta fixes the wording, so these examples show exactly what customers will see, with different expiry settings for each use.

When to send OTP & verification codes messages

  • Immediately, every time; a code that arrives after 30 seconds is a failed login.
  • Set a short expiry (5 to 10 minutes) and tell the user in the optional expiry line.
  • OTPs are requested by the user, so they shouldn’t wait for quiet hours or weekday rules.

OTP & verification codes best practices

  1. Meta generates the body text and adds the Copy code button when you create an Authentication template; you choose the security note and expiry time.

  2. Keep a separate template per flow (sign-in, sign-up, password reset) so you can monitor delivery for each.

  3. Have an SMS fallback for people who don’t use WhatsApp, and never include links or promotions in a code message.

  4. Confirm the user’s WhatsApp number before sending the code to it, and tell them the code is coming by WhatsApp.

  5. Offer a fallback channel (SMS or email) if the code doesn’t arrive within a minute.

Does Social Intents send OTP codes for my app?

No. Social Intents is built for broadcasts and conversations, not for sending one-time codes from your app’s login flow. Generate and send codes from your own authentication system through the WhatsApp Business Platform, and use these examples to get Meta’s format right.

Account & security alerts

Account & security alerts WhatsApp templates

Account and security alert templates tell customers about new sign-ins, usage limits, failed payments, card transactions and password resets. They are Utility or Authentication templates, so they deliver to US numbers. Add a “This wasn’t me” quick reply so suspicious activity reaches your security team in seconds.

Security and account alerts need to be seen quickly. These Utility templates notify customers about new sign-ins, transactions, usage limits and payment problems, with quick replies so suspicious activity reaches a person fast.

When to send account & security alerts messages

  • Security alerts (new login, password reset): instantly, at any hour; they are expected and time-critical.
  • Usage limits: at 80% and 100% of the allowance, during business hours.
  • Transaction alerts: right after the transaction, never batched.

Account & security alerts best practices

  1. Route “Not me” and “Secure my account” replies to a priority Slack or Teams channel so someone responds in minutes.

  2. Never include passwords, full card numbers or codes in alerts; use an Authentication template for codes.

  3. Keep alerts informational. An upgrade pitch inside a usage alert turns it into Marketing.

  4. Mask sensitive values (show only the last four digits of a card) and never ask for passwords in the chat.

  5. Send “This wasn’t me” replies to a dedicated security channel in Slack or Teams with clear escalation steps.

More account & security alerts questions

Can an AI chatbot handle replies to security alerts?

It can answer routine questions, but configure it to hand off immediately to a person for anything that suggests fraud or account takeover.

Can customers turn off WhatsApp account alerts?

Let them choose in their account settings. Critical security notices may still be sent by email, but honor their channel preference for routine alerts.

OTP & Account Alert WhatsApp template FAQs

Practical answers about OTP & account alerts messages on WhatsApp.

Do WhatsApp OTP messages deliver to US numbers?
Yes. Authentication templates are not affected by Meta’s pause on Marketing messages to US (+1) numbers.
Can I customize the text of an authentication template?
Only partly. Meta supplies the fixed “is your verification code” text; you can add the security recommendation and an expiry footer, and choose a copy-code or one-tap button.
Can OTP templates have buttons?
Yes. According to Meta’s authentication template documentation, they use a one-tap autofill button (Android), a copy code button, or no button with zero-tap delivery. You can’t add quick replies or website links.
Are security alerts Utility templates?
Yes. Alerts about activity on an existing account, such as a new sign-in or a card transaction, are Utility and still deliver to US numbers.
What should a new-login alert include?
The device or browser, approximate location, time with time zone, and one clear action if it wasn’t the customer. Don’t include links that look like a login page, which can be mistaken for phishing.
How do I use one of these templates in Social Intents?
Click Use this template on any card to start a free trial with that template pre-selected, or copy the text and paste it into Outbound → Templates → New template. Submit it to Meta for approval, then pick it in a WhatsApp broadcast.
